Nursing is the most admired profession in the world as compared to social sciences because of its seductive salary. However, it is a sensitive profession that is characterized by complicated work schedule and strict departmental conformity that can cause an individual to acquire burnout syndrome which results into long-term psychosocial problems. Lus (2008) research shone a light on the most prevalent problem among Filipino nurses working in the Philippines. For instance, burnout syndrome among Filipino in the Philippines was found out to be not only a common problem among nurses working with multiple patients with healthcare demands but also a problem that increases anxiety in nurses while trying to avoid errors while administering medicine. This article seeks to explore factors that lead to the high prevalence of burnout syndrome among Filipino nurses working in Philippines tertiary hospitals and insight of whether the feelings of burnout syndrome among patients is compromised.
The level of hardiness in a nurse among Filipinos working in the Philippines is one of the major cause of development of burnout syndrome. Italia, FavaraScacco, Di Cataldo and Russos (2008) research, the more a nurse can persevere, the more they avoid development of burnout syndrome. Lus (2008) research also outlined that the best individuals to pursue a nursing profession are the aggressive ones who surpass all odds that arise in the nursing profession. Most Filipinos do not portray aggressiveness thus suffer more when handling aggressive patients thus developing burnout syndrome (Ogresta, Rusac & Zorec, 2008).
Filipino nurses working in Philippines hospitals are met by the heavy burden of dealing with patients who have cancer and more HIV patients with emergency needs thus developing anxiety (Costa et al., 2012). Similarly, some HIV patients who arrive at the healthcare center with severe effects of assuming the HIV call for an emergency service that makes nurses to develop anxiety in dealing with them and reinstating their health. Iglesias, de Bengoa Vallejo, and Fuentess (2010) research stated that burnout syndrome occurs; when struggling to provide healthcare in the required proportion, observing the work shift and working with disrespectful people. Also, dealing with violence from patients, struggling with understaffing, dealing with patients unpredictable, aggressive behavior and lack of support from the department are the other causes of most Filipino nurses developing burnout syndrome (Al-Turki et al., 2010).
Regarding Mealer, Burnham, Goode, Rothbaum, and Moss (2009), another cause of burnout syndrome is lack of experience in the nursing profession. Al_Turki et al.s (2010) research outlined that most of the aged Filipino nurses in Philippines record a lower prevalence than the young in the profession. On the other hand, married individuals are also found to be most prevalent to married individuals due to suffering from emotional exhaustion. Among elderly patients, burnout syndrome results from working long hours trying to manage the extended needs that the old require.
