Who would like to wake up tomorrow to this? Beautiful view of the trees, the sea, and the clear blue sky. A dream come true, isnt it? What you see right now is a photo that I have taken myself in a small town called Marbella, which is found near Malaga, Spain. Im guessing that not many of you have heard of this town before, and thats completely understandable. When I would talk about Spain, your first places in mind would be Madrid, Barcelona or even Seville. My point here is not to let you know which places to go sightseeing in this small town. But rather educate you in a broader perspective, which is showing you that visiting those small cities, towns or even villages located on the map have beautiful things to offer that major touristy places dont.

According to Douglas Wright (an author in Today magazine in 2012), London is the 2nd most visited city by Americans, which is completely understandable as London is one of the most beautiful and important cities in the world. But do you know what percentage of those go outside of London for tourism? The answer is less than 10%. A shocking discovery for me because I cant imagine all beautiful sights people would be missing. And this is just one of the many examples. How would you feel if you have traveled a great distance knowing you have covered only one-third off what you could have done? Not very happy would you? The main reason why people travel is to discover new experiences, which includes history and culture. Although, this cant be accomplished if you are surrounded by tourists throughout your stay.

Step 3

The solution is simple, almost anywhere you go on vacation there will be rural areas or places where you can visit and have fun. Marbella, for instance, is a Spanish town that nobody even thinks to visit. In fact, it is highly likely that I was the only Western tourist to visit the place that year. But that is not important, the crucial thing here is that this town changed my perception of non-tourist cities not only in Spain but also in the world. There are a lot of fantastic things in Marbella, and the most exciting part is that it gives you an opportunity to experience Spain like a local. One thing I learned from this trip is that visiting non-tourist towns allows a person to experience the authentic lifestyle of a country (Maccannell, 30). The atmosphere in these towns is entirely different to what you might experience in tourist cities.

Moreover, non-tourist towns are the best places to eat local foods and to shop at a relatively low price. In Marbella, for example, I was served with some delicious food called Paella which is one of the most traditional meals in Spain. Going into less explored towns will assist you to understand the nation you are visiting in a different perspective than if you just adhere to the usual tourist destinations. It is true that in most non-tourist towns there are high chances that nobody speaks your language. To some people, these may seem like a challenge but trust me it is not. Realizing that there are a lot of people in this world who do not speak your language allows you to note the significance of understanding other traditions and cultures.

In general, visiting non-tourist towns is an interesting way to understand any country. Many of us have been spending a lot of money visiting popular tourist destinations only to get disappointed in the end because you have not experienced anything new. Non-tourist towns are the real deal; it will blow your mind away.

Step 4

Making a trip to non-tourist towns cost roughly the same as visiting tourist towns. It is only that some non-tourist towns are far from the major cities, therefore, one has to use road transport or other available means of transport to reach these places. However, you never have to worry because I have a list of tourist organizations that allow people to travel to these towns at a lower price. I have left some business cards, and pamphlets feel free to contact me with questions, ideas, and concerns.
