North Korea is a comparatively small country with a small population. However, it is one of the most volatile and dangerous countries in the world. It is also a country that has great influence over the politics of the region. The political issues of the nations date back to the cold war when the United States tried to exert influence over the region by trying to fight off communism. Korea was once a single nation, but the differences in political, social and economic ideologies led to the separation into the north and the south. The state of Korea is a peninsula, and this makes it unique. The relative location of the country makes it unique because of its accessibility of resources and also external influences. It is bordered by countries such as China, Russia, and South Korea all of which are very influential for global politics. It is a country characterized by mountainous terrain which is the dominant physical features. It has river valleys and numerous high plateaus its relative location also places it in a religion surrounded by some of the oldest civilizations in history such as the Japanese and the Chinese cultures. The mountainous terrain is very influential because they limit movement of people between the north and the south because they act as great obstacles that impede movement. Approximately eighty percent of the region is covered with mountains. It also has major rivers which are used for the provision of inland transport, but they are very limited because they do not flow all year round. There are very extreme conditions of. Cold winters can sometimes be very severe causing rivers to freeze. There is also heavy rainfall that causes flooding (Yu Nam, 2009, p.10).
There are seasonal changes in temperature all year round. The country is characterized by a humid continental climate. The summers are cool while the winters are dry. The country also experiences climatic and weather hazards. Some of them include high winds and server fogs, especially during the winter. There also droughts, thunderstorms, flooding and typhoons which are experienced during the summer, spring and the fall (Pardo, 2017, p.607).
The above are examples of the climatic and geographical characteristics of North Korea. These are conditions which are very influential in military activities. One of the major obstacles of activities of war is weather and geographical factors. Major wars have been won, and some lost because of climatic and geographical factors. The mountainous nature of the region is a great obstacle to military activities. The terrain and drainage characteristics can influence the development of an ambush during warfare. Movement of troops and military vehicles is highly determined by the geomorphology of the region. The climatic and geographical factors are influential in the development of military strategies because they offer both advantages and disadvantages to military activities. Climatic changes add up or multiply the complexity of military planning, training and overall strategy (Pardo, 2017, p.607).
North Korea is, therefore, a nation that has a great relative location. This is based on its position and how its geographical and climatic factors enhance its military activities. It is a nation with unique geography as well as climatic condition. Its geographical position places it as a great threat to the surrounding countries because it can easily disrupt glow of ships from both Japan and China. However, its central location also makes it highly vulnerable to attacks on all sides (Hodge, 2003, p.68).
