The Young Adult Services was formed in the year 1957 after the reorganization of ALA and the split of Association of Young Peoples' Librarians into the Children's Library Association and Young Adult Service Division. The service was formed to serve children and the young librarians. The organization was formed to help in specific library work and also gave a chance to meet with other librarians and share information or other areas of interest. It advocates the expansion of missions to expand services for the young people.
YALSA aims at improving and strengthening library services using researchers, professional events, and advocacy. The main problems faced by the Young Adult Service were the failure to guarantee the pages, loss of membership identification and inadequate insurance for articles written by members. Academic researchers on the history of young youth service librarianship emerged in the 1970s which great support from the schools. Library materials for young people started with the collection of information, personnel and a specialized collection comprising of detailed pictures of the genesis of children's' book studying (Adkins 2015).
Libraries are community centers that enable teenagers to learn about the evolving issues in the community and entire world. The libraries act as the center for learning, interacting and socializing with each other and the librarians. It also provides services and strengths the needy teen with information and access to modern technology. Library education helps the teen learn how to fit in the modern world. The public librarians ought to reach other librarians found in schools, academic and other individual librarians for unbiased information and promoting learning (Adkins 2015).
According to Martens (2016), today, young adults and librarians are using the social media platforms to library services. It acts as a communication avenue for the teens and the librarians. The social networking sites enable the librarians to learn how to interact with the young adults. The YALSA quotes that Clearly if all libraries serving teens want to more effectively serve today's connected' teens and demonstrate value to the community, they must ramp up engagement in areas beyond academic or formal learning" (Braun, Hartman, Hughes-Hassel, Kumasi & Yoke 2014). Libraries and librarians exist within the daily lives of young adult patrons.Youth service library fulfills the following conditions, specialized space, specialized collection, skilled personnel and programs and all others existing youth services organized for the youths (Adkins & Esser 2015).
Young Adult Services plays a critical role in evaluating and selecting books and other nonbooks materials and also interpret the materials used by the young adults. Young Adults Services for young adults offers knowledge and basic condition for long time learning and also enhance decision making. Teenagers are the target of reading since most of them tend to ignore books at that age (Adkins & Esser 2015). The authors of these books have come up with goals for library service for Young Adults among them been provision of transition from childrens' services to adult services based on their needs. The young adults also require special services that address their education, culture, and information. The library also ought to promote literacy, pleasure in reading and long life learning.
Many scholars have come up with studies and books on the literature of young adults. Critical Approaches to Young Adult Literature written by Kathy H. Latrobe and Judy Drury. The book was published on 13th June 2012 by ALA Editions. The book was written specifically for the librarians in school and public libraries who struggle to collect and program literacy skills for the young people. It also issues questions designed to involve the young adults in activities that require critical thinking and responses. The book has three sections each covering an essential topic to assist the young adults (Fink 2015)
I order to achieve the targeted goal; the librarians have come up with aims to be followed by all librarians when servicing the young adults. Among them are the policy statement based on free access of information and resources, equitable distribution of resources, provision of current materials for youths and issuing of opportunities for young adults to participate in the implementation and planning of library programs. Awards and recognition have made to people who have significantly impacted the field of youth librarianship. William C Morris has received numerous awards and honors for advocating and marketing children and young adults books especially the teenagers (Julian 2016). He has shown generosity by publishing books aimed at promoting the literature of the young people. Morris also supported the ALA financially by funding the programs events, promotions and publications aim at improving the young writing (Spinal 2015).
Margaret A. Edwards (19021988), the Fair Garden and the Swarm of Beasts: The Library and the Young Adult. The last edition was published in 2002by ALA Editions. It is a fascinating and influencing book which shows how the librarians connect with the teenagers in the libraries. It provides information on the foundation of leadership by the young people (Wiegand & Donald 2015). Margaret issues specific ideas on how to evaluate services that best fit the young adults. Some of the ideas include the creation of a healthy environment for fostering intellect and social-emotional growth and also the selection of the fiction and nonfiction that provides information, inspire and help the teens to grow. The book offers a foundation for the current and future librarians leadership on metalling the young teens. For the previous twenty seen years, Edward has received numerous awards for her significant contribution towards young adults literature (Wiegand & Donald 2015).
First edition of Books for Young People, subsequently to become Books for the Teenage, is published in New York Public Library (Campbell, 17).Megan Fink edited the book in 2011.It encourages the young adults especially teenagers to regularly read library books and make good use of the library technology. As a librarian, Megan advises other librarians on how on how to plan their events offer adequate advice and reach various teens with development ideas (Rubin 2015).
The journal of youth service was published in 2002.It aims at educating the young adults on the library usage and also educates the adult librarians how to interact and communicate with teens. The journal contains current news in the field of library, the best practice to adapt to and professional kinds of literature on the library. The content of the journal is derived from the speeches, and background information of various authors (Rubin 2015).
Excellence in Library Services to Young Adults, 5th edition by Army Alessio for YALSA was published in the year 2008.It provides ideas and guidelines for the best programs to be adopted in the public libraries It also offers detailed information on the trend of including teens in all programs of the library including the planning. Library activists like Mary Peacock and Douglas are the pioneers of Library Biography (Chance 2014).
Putting Teens First in the Library Service: A Road Map was written by YALSA and publishes in July 2017. Linda W. Braun, the author of the book, is an education information technology consultant with the Library & Educators Online. The book talks about teen services offered in the library and how the community ought to adopt them .the publication keenly looks at theory and practices surrounding the library service based on the librarians, managers, and researchers. It also explores the best strategies to adapt to improve the lives of adult teens in studying information and knowledge (Hoffman, Subramaniam, Scaff & Davis 2017). There are four chapters in the book whereby section one looks at Continuous Learning while chapter 2 deals with Supporting Youth Learning. Chapter three deals with working together through Youth-Adult Partnership. Chapter four is how adults engage with the community and lastly the assessments and Evaluation of the formal an informal learning spaces (Hoffman et al,. 2017) .
The use of the digital and technological library is increasing as literacy level of young people increases. Trent Mclees wrote STEM and Making in the year 2017.The book talks about adapting the digital literacy in the library. The author analyses the issue of designing a library (Gaffney 2015).
Research on the history of youth-adult service is a field that hasreally changed the lives of many adults academically and knowledge wise. It has improved the communication between the teens and the librarians through interaction and sharing of ideas.
