The Salt-Water Moon is a romantic story that occurred on a moonlight evening of September 1926. Additionally, the event occurred at a rural home, which was situated in Newfoundland. Also, the story was first featured in a 1988 publication that was authored by David French. This is a critical review of a play based on Frenchs (1988) publication that will be acted on stage at The Prairie Theatre Exchange from the 25th of January to February 11, 2018.
Salt-Water Moon Play Production
The production of the play will allow its audience to view Frenchs (1988) popular play again for the first time. Additionally, this is because the plays director has reinterpreted Frenchs (1988) novel into the production of the play. Also, the production of this classic love story has been set straightforwardly. Moreover, this is because its plot will rely simply on text, light, music as well as water to portray the internal and external spheres of the characters Jacob Mercer and Mary Snow.
Also, the spectacular lighting of the play using candles has exemplified the theme of love in the play. Additionally, this is because it portrays the strong sense of passion and attraction between the two teenagers, despite the heartbreak that was caused by Mercers unexplained departure for Toronto, a year ago. Also, as a complement to the floating candles, a guitarist starts the play by singing softly about achy-breaky hearts to symbolize a situation where two persons are meant for each other.
The costuming of the characters in the play will also be used to enhance the stage setting of the play as an early 19th centurys composition. For instance, the Character Snow will be introduced into the play, by her slowly walking into a fog-filled stage adorned in dark clothing - a common attire that was worn in the early 1990s. Also, she will kneel next to a cluster of candles, which she will light using long matches that will be plunked out of an ancient cylindrical canister.
Personal Interpretation of the Play
I love the play due to its precise recreation of the events between Mercer and Snow that took place in the Frenchs (1988) publication. Also, the theme of love is represented in the play s composition through the use of props like floating candles for romantic lighting and soft guitar music in the background. Additionally, I also loved the depiction of water as a stage background attribute, which symbolizes the way houses were built in Newfoundland it the 1920s. According to Frenchs (1988) publication, the houses of the Newfoundland residents were built close to the sea since the waters were a source of their livelihood.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Salt-Water Moon relies on text, light, music as well as water to portray the internal and external spheres of the characters Jacob Mercer and Mary Snow. Also, the theme of love in the play is exemplified by the spectacular lighting of the play using floating candles. Furthermore, the guitar beats at the plays background further advance the theme of love in the composition of the plot of the play. Ultimately, the costuming of the characters in the play also enhance the stage setting of the play as an early 19th centurys composition.
