Developing

Worked under my senior Andrew Mackenzie. I was assigned by him daily duties - I was involved in discussing new complex engineering problem that requires a fast thinking approach and application of first principles to prevent/ reduce trains and system downtime

-I frequently was involved in group technical discussions to overcome rapid singling mechanical track failures whilst minimizing delays.

-I regularly participated in safety inspections of mechanical track equipment.

-I did participated in projects design (2D/3D) and review using SolidWorks (SW)

Functional Worked in the Technical Maintenance Section -I was working as a senior mechanical intern in the Technical Maintenance Section within the Signaling and Control Systems (SCS) Unit.

-Even though I was reporting to Andrew, I had room for making decisions based on the prior experiences.

-This enabled me to develop leadership skills and learn how to communicate effectively.

A clear way of explaining my technical competency is by describing my responsibilities and duties assigned while working with TfNSW. I was working on signaling the trains to ensure that there shall be no downtime. The leading manager in the train service made sure that the instructions given were clear and concise to avoid any errors in train signaling. Initially, the new team working attached to train signaling section were inducted with an objective of delivering services in line with the mission of the firm.

The first thing is to ensure that the train systems are free from faults which assured that the signals given are accurate. Therefore, I regularly participated in safety inspections of mechanical track equipment. These checks are carried out every day, and my supervisor Andrew and signaling engineer were very supportive of the daily checks. The most significant risk of failure in train signaling could result in accidents which then calls for the competence of the persons in the communication center.

The next thing that I was required of is to frequently get involved in group technical discussions to overcome rapidly singling mechanical track failures while minimising delays. The discussions generate progressive approaches to ensuring that there are no delays in the departure of the trains. For example, adopting new technologies and replacing some of the old systems with new ones. After every discussion, we come up with a comprehensive report with suggestions on how to increase efficiency in the system. Representatives of the team will present it to the management of the organization.

The Indicators of Attainment of technical proficiency

c.1 Developing: In my entire internship I was working under Andrew Mackenzie who was guiding me and assigning me my daily duties. Everything that I did was doing on daily was from his directions. Specifically, I was assigned duties which involved discussing new complex engineering problem that requires a fast thinking approach and application of first principles to prevent/ reduce trains and system downtime, participate in group technical discussions to overcome rapidly singling mechanical track failures while minimizing delays and participated in safety inspections of mechanical track equipment.

c.2 Functional: Despite working under Andrew Mackenzie I was working as a senior mechanical intern in the Technical Maintenance Section within the Signaling and Control Systems (SCS) Unit. I had room for making decisions based on the prior experiences, and therefore I was given some space to operate without micromanagement. For example, I was responsible for management of other interns working in the same department. This enabled me to develop leadership skills and learn how to communicate effectively. This is a classic example of how the management in the organization values their employees and gives them a chance to develop leadership and management skills.
