The following story has a lot of versions, but this particular one is the most accurate according to the way family members tell it. It was way back to the mid 1800s that my grandfather Jesus Espinosa was born. He was born in the US (state unknown) and spent most of his life in America until one day he decided he did not want to live in America anymore and moved to Mexico. Jumping from the late 1800s, we skip ahead into the 1930s in the city of Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico, where there was one particular girl living in a particular kind of family. Her name was Antonia Hernandez and her life was not one of the most suitable for a 15-year old girl living with relatives whose affection for her was at a bare minimal. On his early days exploring the new atmosphere around him, Jesus spotted Antonia walking down the street, and so the flattering started. It did not take long before one night he kidnapped her, literally. Apparently no one at Antonias house seemed to mind because she stayed with him as a wife and soon to be mother. Later on she became a mother of 8 children, including my mother Rosa and my aunt Adela. My mother was born in August 1956 and my aunt Adela was born in 1952, both were born in Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico. 3 months after my mother was born, the Espinosa family moved from Uruapan, Michoacan to the city of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

Five years after moving, Jesus passed away leaving young Antonia with 8 children under her only care and in a yet unknown city. Rosa grew up in a poor neighborhood and the family income was very low. Her mother would go to work very early in the morning and was barely able to send them to school. But that did not stop her from going to school, getting a job, and meeting Jose Diaz, who at the time was an engineer already working for a company. He and Rosa met at a mutual neighbors party, which then lead to a first date in a fancy restaurant, followed by two years of dating and finally got married right after, of course not before getting Antonias blessing. Then in 1976, their first child, Janeth, was born. From there, problems started to rise between Rosa and Jose, problems from which they seemed to not find a solution to. Then their hopes of conceiving a second child would bring peace to their lives, which was when Jose Jr. (Pepe) was born. Unfortunately, the happiness from the new child only lasted three years before Jose left Rosa with her two children.

Adela was a completely different story, well not exactly. She had met Baltazar in a party as well, but this was a party from one of her friends. Their thing was always going to fancy dinners and enjoying a social class lifestyle. They had two children as well: Eduardo (Lalo) and Evelyn. Baltazar is a real soccer fan, Adela not so much. Adela likes to go out and meet up with friends, Baltazar did not agree to most of it. They would often have fights, not in front of the kids, but it was obvious when things were not right between them, but they both managed to cope with each other, for a lack of a better way to describe their marriage. They stayed together for 20 years, keeping up with each others opposite personalities until they finally decided to get a divorce. By this time, Eduardo and Evelyn were now adults and understood that their parents best choice was to go each their separate ways. Evelyn is currently living with her newlywed husband in San Francisco and raising a baby girl. Eduardo is living in his house in Tijuana, enjoying the company of his daughter whenever he gets to have her for the weekends. Now Adela is married to a retired marine, while Baltazar had married a real estate agent, and they spend their time traveling and taking a lot of vacations around the country.

Now back to the first story: years after living a lonely life with her now teenage kids, Rosa felt lonely at times, and even though she would not say, she needed a companion by her side. That is when she met Leonardo; a handsome young man who she did not know lived in the same neighborhood as her and they just so happened to meet at a mutual friends party. They saw each other a few times after that until they started dating. My mom did not wait for long and soon waited for the wedding date to approach. She was indeed with the love of her life this time, even Janeth and Jose Jr. wanted to change their last name just so they could be a part of the now Saucedo family. From that lovely marriage came a very expected child since it was Leobardos first child ever: Melissa Gissel Saucedo Espinosa. Leobardos family very much celebrated her birth since Leobardo was a very generous person with just about anyone who needed help. His family really admired and loved him. Rosa was very happy that she could form a family again, which kept growing because it was not just Melissa, but two years after her birth, another child was on the way: Michelle. She was born in September of 1998, almost a premature child who later in her developing years would spend hours and hours in and out of the hospital due to cardiac complications, medication poisoning, epileptic attacks, etc. Fortunately, she was able to go through that phase of her life unharmed. Now she is about to graduate high school with high honors and mostly healthy. Melissa is in college and soon seeks to become a math teacher and possibly a biology teacher due to her strong interest in the subject.

Ok, now we jump just a small step back to Rosas older children: Janeth and Jose Jr. Janeth is an outgoing person who really enjoyed spending time out of her house. In one of the many parties at a relatives house, she met Rene, a Mexican-American young boy who lived in the neighborhood. They did not wait to start dating, but their relationship was odd in a way. They would go on and off from their relationship, but Rene was the one who would always ask Janeth to come back together. It went on like this for a couple of years when Rene finally asked Janeth to get married since he would soon be deployed to go to Iraq since he was in the air force. Janeth accepted and knew what she was getting her into. Once married, they spent a couple years in Tijuana when their first child was born: Aylin Janeth Moreno. At that time, Janeth had gone to live for a few months with her mother Rosa, who at that time was raising Melissa, a year older than Aylin. After those months, Janeth, Rene, and Aylin moved to Colorado due to Renes orders. A couple years after, Leobardo, Melissas father, passed away due to cardiac arrest. Rosa was devastated, so Janeth stayed a few months with her in Tijuana to keep company to her mother. Around three months after Leobardos passing away, Janeth left once again back to Colorado. Due to Renes orders they moved again to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where Daphne, Janeths second child, was born. They lived there for a few years until Renes orders changed once more so Janeth and her family moved to Barstow, California, where they lived for 15 years before moving again to Helendale, Califorrnia, where they currently reside.

While all of these events took place, Jose Jr. on the other hand, being around 16-17 at the time, had problems of his own. He had met a girl from school and started to date her. Unfortunately they were not careful enough which resulted in this girl, Alejandra, to become pregnant. Rosa had always considered Jose Jr. as her favorite child, so she supported him in every way she possibly could. Jose Jr. stayed in school while Alejandra was raising their baby boy, Santiago. They lived in Rosas house throughout most of Santiagos childhood, until they acquired a home of their own. Jose Jr. graduated from college to become an industrial engineer and to give his son the best education he could. Unfortunately, the short marriage between Alejandra and Jose Jr. did not last since it was not a well-planned, rushed marriage for the sake of the child that they did not know how to cope with each other which resulted in a divorce.

Up until now, they have managed to keep a very understanding relationship so they can both raise Santiago in the healthiest way possible. Santiago is currently 13 years old and he is as happy as he can be around his father and mother, and also gets to spend time with his aunts Janeth, Melissa, and Michelle. Aylin and Daphne have become so close with Melissa and Michelle; they can practically be cousins rather than aunt and niece. Wow, what a family we got here!
