Immediately after World War II, the United States abandoned its state of isolationism to adopt foreign interventions during crisis. President Roosevelt started the interventionist approach amidst opposition from influential politicians of the time. The opponents believed in isolationism and valued nonintervention, global free trade, and limited government. Currently, there is an argument that the United States military performs the role of the policemen of the world. Indeed, there are international conflicts and controversies that the United States faces based on its role as the policeman of the world. According to Tierney (2016), the United States role as the policeman of the world during the World War II was important because there were only two superpowers, the Soviet Union and United States. Since the American allies were weak and financially unstable, it was paramount for the United States to assume the role of intervening in the foreign nations. Although there are controversies surrounding Americas role as the world policeman, it has various benefits, such as restoration of socio-economic fabric and reduction of civil groups in war-ravaged nations.
Intervention in Iraq and Syria
Within a period of 5 years, the United States has intervened through the military abroad. The country is largely involved in the Syrian War, which started in 2011. Additionally, the country has been sending military intervention in Iraq since 2014. In both countries, many civilians have died since the start of the war (Tierney, 2016). For instance, more than 400000 Syrians have died since the emergence of Syrian war. Additionally, the life expectancy in Syria has dropped significantly from 70 to 56 years (Tierney, 2016)
The United States plays an important role as the policeman of the world in Syria, especially in diminishing the influence of small groups of terrorists. For instance, Americas involvement has led the mutual cooperation of Syrian, United States, and Russian forces, thus, promoting coordination and teamwork. The decision to work collaboratively with Assad has led to various benefits including the peaceful co-existence of the armies. However, to a large extent, it appears that Assads administration has benefited more from the tacit mutual agreements, thus, defeating small local organizations (Ciezadlo, 2016).
The intervention of the United States in Iraq is pivotal in ensuring the restoration of the countrys socio-economic fabric. For instance, the Yazidis who have been trapped in hills have hope of returning to their original homes. Also, the Christians who had fled from Qaraqoush appreciated the role of the United States in performing airstrike attacks on ISIS. In 2014, more than 50 000 individuals had been displaced following the threats by ISIS/ISIL to force them to convert to Islam (Robers & Ackerman 2014). ISIS took control of a hydro-electric power dam in 2014, thus, limiting distribution of water and electricity. As a result, the economy of the country had been adversely affected.
Controversies
Despite the benefits of US intervention in Iraq and Syria, there have been controversies at home and abroad. For instance, both democratic and republican politicians argued that Obamas decision to authorize the air strikes would not lead to long-term benefits. Some individuals argue that the increasing domestic threats could also act as triggers for increase American intervention in Syria and Iraq. As a consequence, the US might enter into war with ISIS to serve its interests at the expense of those of two nations (Tierney, 2016). Nevertheless, the US should continue with its role because it might lead to a satisfactory outcome. Therefore, it implicates that the United States must strengthen its foreign policy to reduce the acceleration of the cycle of wars in the world.
