A structure is anything constructed from different connected parts and has a fixed point on the ground. Such include buildings. Also, the term is used to denote a body with connected parts designed to hold loads though not made specifically to hold people. Sometimes engineers refer to such as non-building structures. These may include tunnels, retaining walls, roads, railways, dams, chimneys and cooling towers, canals, bridges viaducts, and aqueducts. Structural engineers assess structures to ensure efficiency and stability. The specialists deal with various structures which include oil rigs, bridges among others. The image shown below is a structure because it has all the features engineers consider to qualify a structure.

Civil engineers construct, design and manage physical environment including coastal defenses, dams, canals, railways, roads, tunnels, bridges among others. Structural engineering used to be part of civil engineering before it developed into a complex field. In structural engineering, structural elements are classified as follows:

One-dimensions: Arches, beams, struts, and ropes

Two-dimensional: Vaults, shells, slabs, plates, and membranes.

Three-dimensional: That is; solid masses as per the above image

A structure should have other elements such as load-bearing walls, floors, and structural frames. Compartment walls are factored as structural elements. Roofs are not considered part of a structure unless they are floors. Also, external walls including curtain walls and cladding which are known for wind loads and self-weight are not considered load-bearing an element of structures.

Structure's Connection to Design Theory

Design theory provides the fundamentals of forming visual communication and other types of art. It involves the way people perceive and view information. This includes the understanding of various tangible aspects such as form volume, shape, line, composition, structure, texture, scale, color, proportion, form and space among others. The provided structure has a color effect, proportions, volume, shape, structure texture among other factors that trigger attraction from far. Design elements and principles portray ideas regarding the visual art applied to the image. For instance, the structure has three-dimensional elements and can be enhanced in color, texture or shape. Also, the structure has form features likely to attract people. The Gestalt principle is realized in this structure. The primary effect of viewing the structure is appealing and attractive. The structure is made in attractive shapes with varying sizes and shapes. The structure seems to have communication effects. It is designed in a manner that one sees more than just an image. It tends to communicate something to the viewer. It could be sending a message to its viewer regarding a hotel a beach among others possible buildings. The floor and the walls are attractive from a distance. Also, the walls are designed in patterns which give a visual sense of order. The patterns are proportionally designed to create a sequence. This includes the floor which has familiar patterns and shapes with lines. Therefore, the image provided can be classified as a structure since it has all the structural features recognized by engineers.
