This is a core skill that calls for individuals with a similar objective or goal to put their minds together in order to achieve a shared purpose in a particular set up (Lindblom, n.d.)
Importance of teamwork
There is usually a reward for success in team working that really inspires me as an individual. An example is a team of basketball that is organized and every player does his part passionately to increase the number of scores into the basket, the same happens in football among other sports.
I selected this skill because of it can be universally applied in any sector to ensure harmony is applied in the process of success achievement. When the concept that embraces teamwork in any organization is applied, the theory of none of us alone can be better than all of us when we work together applies effectively (Worsley, 2013, p. 109)
A Reflection
As a live savior, I encountered a drowning swimmer one day on the beach, I was with my peers at that time. Quickly, I gathered them and assigned those duties on how to give a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) after I swam and rescued the lad. One was holding the victim in position, another giving chest compressions as I gave rescue breaths and confirmed for the level of consciousness. Before long, this worked! The lad was on his feet again and requested for something to drink. He was much stable.
The mental picture on how to conduct an effective Resuscitation helped plus the credit from my peers on how I efficiently organized them into a vibrant team and directed them really motivated me and made me feel that I had grasped the teamwork skill well at that time.
I checked on the lad again on the beach the next day and to my surprise, I found him running up and about. I called him and his friends and gently cautioned them against swimming in a high tide and also the risks of doing it alone minus a life savior around. I also grasped that moment to teach them on how to rescue someone who is drowning ("How to Save an Active Drowning Victim," 2017)
To ensure understanding I gave them a sample picture to refer as per the appendix
How I see myself
I like being positive about myself. However, I allow a few critics to cross me but to never put me down.
Avoiding ego which is a vice has helped me improve my performance standards, I believe that ego kills a teamwork that is meant to be effective ("Work Together Powerful Teamwork Story," 2012)
I always see myself as a person who is an effective leader who is able to manage complex tasks by utilizing the attributes of every team member in my group.
Also, on the contrary, I view myself as an individual who has more gaps to fill, that is to say that, I need to learn more to be a better team player in terms of improving my speed of delivery, because I realized I am a little bit slow and this will benefit more people achieve their potential through my capacity
How others see me
From peer feedbacks, a better percentage feedbacks view me as an effective leader who does so by example, the event in the beach spread in college and majority were pleased including my tutors. This positive performance and quality team playing has been due to me following the finer details of every procedure or event and whenever I am not sure of something, I always consult my seniors in the faculty.
Also, I tend to feel that others see me as someone who wants it all. That is to say that, they feel, I know and want to know too much. This could be a weakness or a strength depending from which perspective it is viewed but I always aspire to bring a larger crowd together, sharpen them until I feel they are ready to exist much more effectively in this challenging and yet dynamic and vibrant society.
How the teamwork as a skill will help me in the future
Getting to involve others in a complex activity has proved to really help build me. Also taking into consideration other peoples feedback, including my peers and tutors, has helped me rediscover my strengths and weaknesses and therefore set strategies on how to handle myself while alone or in the crowd.
Building leadership skills are one among the major benefits and not to mention improving collaborations with others who share the same objectives while trying to understand each team member as an individual with unique characters and talents that can be tapped to help achieve an organizations objectives.
The core skill I have chosen is resilience. This refers to the ability of one to recover from difficult situations
According to Maslow Hierarchy of needs ("Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs," 2016), the things at the bottom of the pyramid are easy to handle but difficult to get. For instance, food is easy to get than self-actualisation. However, it is necessary to be hardened to be able to handle difficult challenges and recover from those that are difficult.
I remember having injured my arm and the final exams were to be on the following day. The pain was so much, but I had to strongly persevere through the period of the exam till I was able to finish the last exam paper. I managed to overcome this by self-determination and having a strong desire to pass than the pain I was experiencing.
I feel I am able to persevere any difficult situation, but my parents believe I still need protection since I am young to them.
When working and I have to let go of my pleasure for the general good, I believe this skill will help me.
Time management is the core skill here .It involves using time as a resource to execute functions effectively
Time management is important in many ways (AppointmentPlus, 2015)
Effective time management of time helps accomplish many things
Achieving a lot with little effort, effective decision making, being successful in a career by controlling time well and able to handle other opportunities around
In my academic studies, it is evident that I have a time schedule for each daily activity and a work plan, so the possibility of committing errors is minimized.
I see myself as someone who when I have reviewed my calendar of activities, I am able to plan my time well and execute my activities efficiently.
According to Henry Fayols management principles, I believe that this skill will help me handle all the principles effectively. For instance; planning, controlling, communication, directing among others
Written communication is the core skill here. It involves passing a message through writing ("Written Communication," 11)
Written communication is necessary because most people tend to understand better through a written message. Also, a written document can be used as evidence. It is also a private way of communicating especially when the information is electronic and protected ("Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986," n.d.)
I had a challenge in pronouncing some words to my juniors and so to avoid embarrassment, I had to do electronic messages and ensure my image is maintained and the message is well passed and understood.
Generally, I see myself as a better person in using written communication rather than oral. This has helped me pass message well and reduce mistakes in the society.
I have a passion for working with the children who cannot read, and through my writing, I can reach a message to them in their language and help them understand
Summary Analysis and Action plan
For one to well understand a character, one needs to develop a close association with the second party ("Gamasutra - The Art & Business of Making Games," n.d.) This will help one analyze effectively the desirable character needed and act to strategically help the rest of the team in achieving the objectives on the table. Being much aware of someones strengths and weaknesses will enable one to build a focused team that is able to achieve the organizations goals at the same time leave the rest of the team members satisfied
