Once more, December is here, and everyone wants to go out with family just to have some good time together. In one of the many night outs, I attended Jennifer Leitham's Jazz Concert, which took place on DD/MM/YY at the VENUE. It was an occasion where the artist would not only entertain her audience but also sell her CDs to the people. Therefore, I believe that she had to give her very best to the audience, lest she would not market her songs as per her wish. To me, it was not just an entertainment time like any other; instead, it was an opportunity to learn facts and relate the concepts studied in music.
It would not go without describing the physical environment. From the lighting, the atmosphere, the choice of words, and the dressing code, it was all about Christmas. A majority were dressed in red and white, and they would join the musician in dancing the Christmas songs. What is more, the audience would show their concentration by not only clapping but also laughing whenever Jennifer would stop to speak. That was a sign of appreciation for the good work that the artist had done in composing her songs and presenting them so admirably. Further, it was a sign of the joyous mood that the people were in being that the year had come to an end, and it was time to make merry.
Unto the actual presentation, one cannot talk about the concert without describing the music performed. Jennifers use of instrumentals was quite admirable. A music scholar could describe the tempo of her performance as vivace because all her songs lured the audience into joining through dance. Personally, I would not stop dancing at the double bass and drum sounds that defined the instrumentation of most of the songs she presented that day. Besides, her songs gave an accurate picture of the Jazz genre where artists employ syncopation to keep their audience lively. For example, in her Jingle Bells, the artist used varying tempo and pitch to achieve different rhythms within one song. Indeed, the presentation was quite lively because Jennifers team had access to a variety of instrumentals.
Considering the performer, one notices that her excellent presentation was possible because she made herself part of the songs. For instance, she said that she wanted to compose Little Drummer Boy, but she was neither a little male nor a drummer. Therefore, she had to make it Little Drummer Boy/Big Base Girl by using drums and the base as the only instrumentation in the song. Further, she also acknowledged that home is not necessarily where one is born; it is the place where one feels comfortable. That relates to her life being that she was born John Leitham in Philadelphia, but changed to Jennifer Leitham and settled in Los Angeles. That suggests that Jennifers most prominent strategy in composing music is that she sings what relates to her.
Concussively, the concert gave me the opportunity to understand Jazz music and how audience reaction determines the success of a presentation. From my observations, I could claim that Jazz artists make use of instrumentals to create various rhythms, and that defines the genre. Further, I would assume that most artists compose songs about themselves; hence, they feel their presentations. Accordingly, a good command of a song and proper use of instruments to create rhythm results in a lively audience.
