Manet can be regarded as a unique painter who refused to conform to the traditional painting routines and instead chatted his unique approach to painting. Manet was a significant inspiration to the young artists and gave them the ability to be innovative which led to the development of Modern art and impressionism by being the first artist to defy the traditional techniques of art representation and choosing the subjects to paint from events and circumstances happening in his own life (Moscovici, Claudia 66).

How did he represent a change from Romanticism and what were his most controversial works of his career?

Manet work of art was a shift from romanticism by converting romanticism into modernism with much controversial art that was rejected by art salons at the time which inspired many young men into modernism. Unlike those who followed rules of art and made paintings in salons, Manet ventured into open air drawing which improved his ability to observe and represent nature. Manet work Le Dejeuner sur lherbe was rejected by salons because of its revolutionary technique and failing to conform to romanticist techniques. The use of juxtaposition of naked women and well-dressed men was controversial which led to its rejection by many art salons. His artwork Olympia despite being accepted by a salon it was controversial by depicting sexuality at large, and many of the offended viewers almost destroyed the painting (Moscovici, Claudia 68).

Finally, how did he influence the development of European painting in the 19th century?

The major influence created by Manet in European painting was his freestyle approach to painting which led to the development of a modern art which was created by rebellious young painters (Moscovici, Claudia 71).

Impressionism

How did the introduction of Japanese art influence the Impressionists in their abandoning of the stylistic characteristics of traditional Western painting?

Impressionist and post-impressionists largely borrowed from Japanese art especially the compositional aspects, color and imagery which was all influenced by the Japanese aesthetic. The color woodcut technique was initially developed by Japanese artists and adopted by western artists who further led to the abandonment of traditional western designs by impressionists. For instance, Mary Cassatt painting the woman bathing shows Japanese color composition and imagery. The painting borrows the emphasized shapes and the asymmetrical composition of Japanese art (Dixon, Laurinda 139).

Since the Impressionists loved to paint landscapes and portraits like the Dutch Baroque artists of the 17th Century, how does Impressionism differ from Dutch Baroque art?

The main difference between impressionist and Baroque art can be found in impressionists focus on light and natural aspects which did not have deep hidden meaning or concerns of religious or morality. On the other hand, baroque art was infused with deep meaning and symbolism by focusing more on deep spiritual subjects, and it is more disciplined compared to impressionism technique that has loose form and focuses on light (Schindler, Richard 10).
