Effects of Use of Social Media for Professional or Academic Development

The use of social media has both its advantages and disadvantages. Personally, the use of social media is quite beneficial to me when handling a group assignment. Group assignment requires the participation of each member of the group to ensure increased productivity (Benson & Morgan, 2016). Notably, it is not possible for the group members to be at the same point at the same time. The use of social media such as Facebook or Snapchat improves the participation of the members of the group since to bridges the geographical barrier. Additionally, such platforms improve participation and collaboration among the team members.

Various disadvantages accrue due to the use of social media platforms that negatively affect both personal and professional development. On my case, social media causes a lot of distraction. Social media has various contents that interfere with ones concentration (Kind et al, 2014). For example, there are interesting entertainment items that have the propensity of distracting a student like me from concentrating in academic work. Such deviations hinder the use of the platform as an education resource thereby reducing academic growth and classroom participation. To this end, social media is a hindrance to professional and academic development.
