The line between leisure and work is growing slimmer and slimmer as the days go by. We live in a world that has a lot of demand. People spend their time at work and have become dedicated to their world of work. The need for economic development through employment is reflective of the capitalist society of today where money talks. In this kind of world, leisure becomes a great luxury. The development of technologies has led to the development of smart devices. People now take their work back homes and weekends have become non-existence. The development of flexible schedules for work has continued to blur the days universally considered for leisure and are now used as working days. This paper will explore various aspects of work and leisure and how the two have affected the lives of people.
According to Dough Saunder, leisure is a great development in humanity. It is considered as a revolution that came after smiling became an important aspect of socialization. Smiles came up until the end of the 18th century. It was a notion considered vulgar in the time before and it was an act without any concept that could be used to describe it. The development of smiling caused a revolution in the world in terms of how people related to one another. It caused a great shift in the aspect of social practices and activities because, the small gestures caused people to spend more time together in activities nonrelated to obligations of work, religion and other factors. It led to the development of leisure time form where people could have face to face time with one another and enjoy their time and environment.
Smiles led to the development of a revolution on social practices that led to the development of leisure. The development of smiles followed with the development of dentistry led to a higher need to spend quality time with family and friends. This development following the great need for the spare time because spending time with friends and family became a very important part of peoples social life. The development of this spare time can be described as the development of leisure which became a great development of the world of industrialization and employment. The development of leisure followed with developments of weekends, holidays and vacation. This was time people spend relaxing, socializing and carrying out nonwork activities. The development of leisure led to the establishment of other factors such as mass entertainment because the development of spare time led to the development of boredom. Boredom is a factor associated with free time. As people have time to spare form their work, they get bored and this created a gap for the development of other important activities. Mass entertainment has become a great feature of leisure because it leads to the reduction of boredom.
There have been highly established systems of full-time jobs where people work for five days of the week and the remaining day they spend on their leisure activities. This is a forest's system of employment that has existed for many years. Despite the development of such a system and the high focus on leisure time, the world has had great changes especially in the development of part-time and flexible working hours. This is a system of operation in employments where people work at different times of the day and the week. Some people work on weekends and others work at night.
The development of flexible working hours has caused a great change in operations of the workplace. The normal working hours that created ample time for leisure and spare time has been greatly altered. This is a change that is altering various establishment of leisure. The line between work and leisure is becoming thinner and thinner as time goes by.
Full-time jobs with ample spare time for leisure are becoming very rare. There is also the rise of self-employment with people doing economic activities using systems that do not recognize time for leisure. People with well-defined time for leisure are, therefore, slowly becoming a minority in the society. The system is changing and more companies are adopting flexible working hours because it maximizes on production. The need for profitability coupled with high demands for employment is creating very different working conditions. Employees are accepting difficult working times to survive in employment. The development of technology is also allowing employees to take their work at home, work at night and even carry them out throughout the weekend. Form the above information; it is very clear that the line between work and leisure is becoming highly nonexistence. People are slowly forgetting what holiday and leisure mean. Full-time employment seems like a system that will slowly seize to exist. With the reduction of leisure time and spare time because of too much time spent at work, then the world is slowly going back to the time where social practices were only limited to work activities.
