I served as a server administrator and business systems analyst. As a server administration, my responsibilities were tracking the activities on the servers, conducting any necessary upgrades in the computer systems and maintaining computer hardware. In the same capacity I was also expected to address any technical issues in the system, review the systems, and where necessary, write a report about them and submit it to the manager. In the process of executing these functions, I also perfected my knowledge in PowerShell and Desired State Configurations. Similarly, as a Business System Analyst, I was expected to determine the daily business objectives by analyzing output requirements. I also designed computer programs to support the business processes. Essentially, I carefully monitored all business systems, fixing issues, ensuring efficiency, publishing reports and occasionally, recommending actions to the manager. In the course of all these, I was also expected to maintain the institutional data confidential and out of reach of unauthorized parties. I also took several lessons out of the internship opportunity. Before my arrival I had no clue how to operate two servers concurrently, but through this experience I learned how to move, rack and install 40 mixed servers. I also learned how to configure different operating systems and other software like SincWall. On top of that, I even got a chance to perfect other areas in my information technology field.

The internship opportunity was instrumental in shaping my career, and would potentially have a lasting impression. First, I am now confident moving, racking and installing 40 mixed servers, contrary to what I felt before my arrival at the company. Apparently, I anticipate getting an opportunity to deal with even more bigger projects dealing with the same, just to gauge my ability and experience in the field. Other than the technical skills, the opportunity also helped me learn how to improve other aspects critical to a career as an IT professional. Consistent communication either orally or through written reports helped me improve my communication skills. Working in an environment with several employees also mean that you must be prepared to encounter problems that need solutions. Over the internship period I had my fair share, which helped me strengthen my problem skills. Monitoring and report writing needs strong decision making skills to know what to write and what not to, and I did that perfectly well. I had a boss but most of the time he assigned me tasks and checked on the progress later on, something which contributed to my self-management skills. There are more other skills that I improved as an intern.

An opportunity as an internship work experience as a data center server administrator and business systems analyst enabled me to practice what I have been learning as theory, putting them into perspective to solve real world challenges. Even though the internship was short, I managed to gather significant lessons. The lesson ranged from technical skills to management skills. It is an opportunity I would take again, but this time would love even bigger challenges, to give me a better understanding and experience in the information technology filed.
