Art is defined as a creation of imagination and skill that is used to convey a specific feeling or idea. Examples of art include paintings, sculptures, songs, or a unique dancing routine. Artists, therefore, make use of art to convey their message or emotions towards various happenings in the society. On the other hand, censorship is a process that involves examination of art including books, movies, and images to determine if they are in line with the moral requirements of a society, in which case, they are either banned or embraced. For a long time now, censorship has become part of the American culture. A number of artists have experienced their possibly inappropriate works banned from social media, libraries, and galleries. However, I agree that when a specific art is explicit, offends, and provokes a big population of the society, it should be censored. Some of the arts that should be censored include those that are obscene, immoral, vulgar, and explicit.
To begin with, the freedom of speech and expression has its limits. Therefore, this right should not be violated by artists in films to discuss controversial subjects, such as race and religion, which tend to raise different reactions. Hence, art should be reviewed continuously to ensure its content is not vulgar or offensive to a particular group. Secondly, some arts are usually exaggerated and very immoral. Displaying nudity and pornographic content in a public museum is unwise. It is not only uncomfortable but also inappropriate especially for minors. Thirdly, some films exhibit incredibly violent scenes which in most cases arouse feelings of war and revenge. The scenes are made to appear natural; thus, unless they are censored, they could create a society characterized by vengeance and inhumanity.
Nevertheless, the Alaska gallery should not have been closed. The gallery sponsored workshops, provided grants for upcoming artists, helped advance e-commerce, and led to the opening of other small museums. Besides, it was a significant source of contemporary and traditional crafts. Over the course of its existence, it managed to change the career lives of over one thousand Alaska native artists. Thus, it was a legendary asset.
